How everything started

In 2021 I joined Prime Surveys, a survey service app from Germany.

It collects marketing data through questionnaires on websites. Site owners and their users are rewarded and the business receives valuable data.

To motivate users to take surveys it is important to close their questions. To do this, it's important to understand the scenario the user is going through.

For example, how long does it take to get
an award, what is the selection process for
a quiz, can you use a VPN?

Conclusions

Conclusions

There are different types of users. Those who don't like long surveys and those who are interested in earning. So it is important to give users a choice to attract them. Also, many users have fears and concerns and questions that may prevent them from participating in surveys. For example what If didn't receive a screen-out reward, etc.

Hypotheses and key problems

Hypotheses
and key problems

• Enhance user engagement.

• Prevent fraud and ensure data quality.

• Overcoming retention and attraction barriers.

• Informing users about progress and states.

To increase motivation, I offered a variety of survey types — shorter ones for quick participation and longer or higher-paid ones for more significant rewards — while addressing common objections through clear FAQs and improved UX.

Also it is important to close user objections and answer all questions. For example, how long does it take to get an award, what is the selection process for a quiz, can you use a VPN, etc.

II. Attraction and retention

II. Attraction
and retention

Users responded positively to the variety of questionnaire types. The FAQ block also helped address most common questions. However, after collecting customer feedback, we discovered that some respondents were completing surveys too quickly, and the quality of their answers was not satisfactory. After brainstorming with the team, we concluded that these edge cases needed to be addressed in the design.

III. Attraction and retention

The next step was to refine the UX for survey participants. Through a respondent survey, we discovered the need to improve message copy and provide clearer guidance, helping users understand what went wrong and what actions to take next.

Outcome

I conducted competitive research and provided conclusions and actionable recommendations. After successfully launching the MVP, the project grew to 2 million users within a year.

Some users attempted to complete questionnaires as quickly as possible without providing thoughtful answers. To address this, we developed a system to detect and flag excessively fast activity.

In the scenarios, it was important to account for edge cases and provide clear informational messages. One of the challenges for the service was that some users attempted to game the system — completing surveys too quickly or giving low-quality answers in an effort to earn more points. There were also cases where users simply did not qualify for a survey.

Sometimes a user does not qualify for a survey because they fall outside the specific target audience, and this is important to account for in the scenario.

Improved feedback

The next step was to refine the UX for survey users. We conducted a respondent survey and found that it was necessary to improve the message copy and provide clear guidance, ensuring users understand what went wrong and what actions to take next.

To motivate users to complete surveys, it was important to address their questions and concerns. User responses were monitored for quality, and if a response was deemed too low-quality, the user received a message restricting access to further surveys. The next step was to refine the UX for survey participants.
